Dental Fillings

Dental Filling is a part of the restorative dentistry. It is used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or damaged surfaces of the teeth. Dental filling materials, includes composite, porcelain and silver amalgam.

Tooth sensitivity may result because of enamel loss. Tooth sensitivity caused by enamel loss can be completely eliminated once an appropriate dental filling material is filled.

During routine check-ups or at the time of dental emergency visits, the dentist checks the teeth, gums and the supporting bone structure. The dentist identifies the number of tooth surfaces affected by decay and then prepares the tooth accordingly to restore the damaged area. Dental hand – piece or laser is used to remove the decay or damage. Later, the area is cleansed very carefully to remove bacteria or debris before the actual restoration gets completed.

Composite fillings are comparatively more expensive than the traditional amalgam fillings. It is because amalgam fillings require a more sophisticated procedures, expensive materials and additional dental equipments. Dental Fillings cost depends on a various factors, including the dentist who performs the treatment, the location of the clinic, the number of tooth surfaces that need dental fillings.

It is noted that on an average amalgam fillings last approximately for 10 - 12 years, while composite fillings last up to 7 years.
