Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a part of Cosmetic Dentistry and is mainly concerned with straightening of teeth and the correction of malocclusion (misaligned bite) using dental braces and retainers. An Orthodontist is required to complete an additional 2 - 3 years of post-dental education before becoming a certified practitioner in this discipline.

Orthodontics mainly involves repositioning of the teeth and the underlying roots, thus, providing better support for the crown of the tooth. Orthodontic treatment can also enhance the facial appearance in cases which involve reshaping the jaw, neck and the lips.

Malocclusions may result in tooth irregularity or/and disproportionate jaw relationships. Malocclusion is a nuisance as it interferes with eating and speaking. It also prevents the development of a beautiful smile due to improper alignment.

Orthodontists review the dental records of their clients. They examine and take X-rays of the mouth and head and makes models of the teeth by creating an accurate impression of them. After gathering enough information, the Orthodontists study the case carefully and conclude about the best treatment required for the client.

The Orthodontics treatment duration may extent to 2 years and it depends on the age of the patient and the complexity of the situation. After the treatment, the patient/client may have to wear a retainer for some time period suggested by the Orthodontist.
